NT Adventures
We spent July to September 2023 in the NT (Katherine and Darwin). We love the NT as it still has a sense of untamed wildness about it. The red soil, vast open spaces, a mix of native and introduced flora, impressive fauna, and an ever changing landscape. A very relaxed lifestyle too.
We were in Katherine for the first 9 weeks. Great to renew acquaintances at Manbulloo Homestead Caravan Park, about 12km west of Katherine off the Victoria Highway. A peaceful spot by the Katherine River, with towering African mahogany and other trees for shade. Caleb (our dog) caught up with his buddy, John, and they shared hugs. At this time of the year the weather is warm, but not unbearably so. Some of the sights are a bit of a drive, but the scenery and serenity of the national parks and waterholes are well worth it. The above pic is from Umbrawarra Gorge Nature Park, about 22km west of Pine Creek.
I volunteered one day a week in the nursery at O’Keefe House, with my reward delicious home made scones (plain, pumpkin and gluten free).
The only downside to our stay was we were too early for mango season and the music and laughter of the pickers from Samoa.
Up to Darwin for the final 3 weeks. Been there a couple of times, but not as long a stay. The city has grown, with places that were once remote eg Humpty Doo, now part of the outer suburbs. We stayed at Coolalinga Tourist Park. Well maintained and calming place to stay. Best to get a shady spot if possible as the newer trees aren’t big enough yet. Some interesting flora finds here: Indian Gooseberry (Amla) with its sour but tasty fruit, Indian Blackberry (Jamun) with its semi sweet maroon to purple fruit, and Cocky Apple (Planchonia careya) with its large pink flowers with white stamens that flower in the evening and night.
I joined the Top End Gem Club, based in Knuckey Lagoon. Friendly and knowledgeable group of people who seem to have been fossicking all ver the NT and beyond. Great open air set up under a large pergola with seriously impressive main fan. Worked on some different pieces including Amethyst, swapped a few rocks and gained the inspiration to try carving and engraving.
Caught up with Hannah, one of Moni’s friends from India and later Australia and shared stories, food (getting better at prawn biryani) and had a go at wire wrapping.
We hope to return in 2024 for a longer stay.
